So I've been making decent progress on my second manuscript. I ran into a problem yesterday, though. I just about fell asleep while I was writing. Finally, I gave up. (Normally I write for a half hour on weekdays. Technically, I didn't miss out on much time because my timer only had like three minutes left on it.)
I've been feeling the last couple of days like this particular segment I'm working on isn't the most exciting. I needed it to introduce some characters who will be important later, and to demonstrate that my current viewpoint character has met them (later it will be important that they recognize her). And there is going to be a bit of drama in a couple of days' time (in the story) as a result of what's going on now. It's also a bit of a reality check for the viewpoint character (she's contemplating running away and hasn't, up to this point, really experienced a life of "roughing it"). But what's going on now isn't terribly interesting, in my estimation.
Now, I'm just writing this part anyway. Because I can always remove it later, or rewrite it, or shorten it, or whatever. Maybe I'll come up with a brilliant idea later to make it more interesting.
At any rate, I don't even know if it IS boring. Because I have been really tired nearly every night of late. I'm going to blame P90X (I'm in Week 4 right now). Which is also making me really hungry all the time.
If I can just make it through about Saturday with the writing, I should be past this part and into a couple of exciting scenes (arguments, duels, angry confrontations, etc.). Then on to a new set of characters for awhile.
There was one segment of the previous novel where I felt this way. Some people were hiding out at a cabin in the woods. Things were happening, but there wasn't much action. I cut out a lot of the text, then, during revision. At least I'm not afraid of deleting large chunks of text, if I think it will make for a better story.
Anyway, back to work.
